Turbine Fitter – Sasol


Secunda Synfuels Operations (SSO) operates the world’s largest coal-to-liquids (CTL) facility and produces synthesis gas (syngas) through coal gasification and natural gas reforming, using Sasol’s unique and proprietary technology to manufacture synthetic fuel components, pipeline gas and chemical feedstock. To support production by providing effective equipment maintenance and reliability while adhering to procedures and codes and utilizing all available support resources to increase stability and maintain sustainability of the plant. Turbine fitter must always maintain good HOUSEKEEPING in the place of work. Report to the Foreman on work status in the plant and in the workshop as well as potential or real SHE risks at all times.



  • Maintenance of compressors, turbines, gearbox and multi-stage pumps, in accordance to approved Quality Control Plans (QCP) and General Overhaul Procedures (GOP).
  • Work on equipment once and then commission without a need for re-work.
  • Required to (work) on the plant with mechanical equipment in accordance to business needs.
  • Comply with all relevant safety standards / codes.
  • Identify all unsafe conditions and bring under attention of management
  • Maintain HOUSEKEEPING at all times in the workshop, laydown area and in the plant.
  • Do fault finding on failed equipment and on equipment that is not performing to the desired level. Be able to interact with other disciplines (Production, Electrical Maintenance and Instrument Maintenance).
  • Exercise his/her technical knowledge during equipment assembly and consult with technician or engineer when something is not clear.


In addition to a pre-employment medical examination, some positions may require a physical fitness assessment as part of the normal selection criteria.


National Senior Certificate with mathematics and science, English

Qualified Artisan Fitter (NQF4 Sasol or equivalent) recognized by Sasol with a minimum of 1-2 years’ Rotating equipment experience.

Valid South African driver’s license



1 – 2 Years turbo rotating equipment maintenance experience in chemical plant environment

Knowledge of mechanical seals & installations

Fault finding on turbo-machinery.

Knowledge of oil systems related to turbo equipment

Knowledge of SAP plant maintenance.

Skills on using turbo-machinery measuring equipment (inside and outside micrometer, Vernier caliper, clock gauge {Pepitas}, feeler gauge etc.) and knowledge when to use which measuring instrument
