Scientist I R&T – Sasol

Purpose of Job

The candidate will conduct research, including experimental work, primarily in the field of Cobalt based Fischer-Tropsch catalysis, which may include catalyst preparation, optimization, activation and regeneration. The candidate will be responsible for the contextualisation of relevant characterisation data and catalyst testing.  Further responsibilities include: Coordinator and/or technical track lead of less complex Operations support projects within Research and Technology (R&T); Support to Research projects within the parameters of the Sasol R&T Project Governance principles; Accountable for scoping and executing defined research activities and ensuring integrity of own experimental work and recommendations; Assess alternative scientific solutions by synthesizing literature knowledge with experimental data and drawing conclusions; Build up know-how in specific knowledge area, while working flexibly across wider department to deliver on priority projects.

  • Lead and implement value-added scientific solutions within the specific research area.
  • Execute projects within time, budget and to business and quality requirements; while adhering to SHE, portfolio management, technology governance, IP and other business systems/requirements.
  • Maintain scientific standard of excellence and expand own understanding across technologies in discipline (e.g., literature, patents, technology landscape, conferences) and advance body of knowledge within technology area.
  • Apply sound scientific principles in all research projects.
  • Participate in the review of current research projects and formulation of alternative solutions to business support and product / process development projects.
  • Participate actively in innovation and cost-reduction activities in new catalyst developmental programs
  • Conduct experimental work on bench-scale laboratory preparation, activation and regeneration units, where required.
  • Capture research outputs formally in written format to facilitate knowledge management and

actively maintain and contribute to knowledge management practices in team.

  • Ensure adherence to Sasol governance and risk management policies, including safety

  • Ensure that consultation and alignment with relevant Senior Scientist, Principal and Expert is done
  • Represent Sasol with professionalism in external engagements (3rd party feedback sessions, conferences, etc)


Formal Education

  • University Bachelor’s Degree (Hons, MSc or PhD – advantage)


Min Experience

  • 3 years’ experience in catalysis research either in an academic or industrial laboratory environment
